Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke took advantage of the windy conditions in Mallorca to finish on six under par and win the Iberdrola Open at Pula Golf Club. With rounds of 65, 70, 70 and 69 Clarke won his 13th European Tour title.
Starting the day on Sunday Darren was four shots behind stablemate Chris Wood but the weather conditions suited Darren who shot a closing round of 69. Darren reduced Chris’s advantage to just one shot within the first three holes and all went well until he found the water on the 11th and suffered a double bogey. He came back with birdies at the 14th and 15th, saved par on the 16th from the fairway bunker, holed a putt from off the green on the 17th with a Rescue club and made a solid par at the 18th.Source: www.darrenclarke.com
| Shane became only the third amateur to win a European Tour title – and the second in 2009 following New Zealander Danny Lee – when he captured the Irish Open. The then 23 year old beat Robert Rock at the third hole of a play-off. Shane has gone on to achieve a great deal in his young career, emulating his fellow Irish European Tour Champions Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Paul McGinley and Rory McIlroy by winning the prestigious Irish Amateur Closed Championship in 2007. |

He became the youngest winner on the European Tour when he captured the Castello Masters at Costa Azahar in October 2010 at 17 years and 188 days, smashing the record held by Danny Lee, who was 18 years and 213 days old when he won the 2009 Johnnie Walker Classic. Matteo’s four stroke victory – following four rounds in the 60s – earned him the Golfer of the Month award and followed him becoming the second youngest European Tour Member in history after the legendary Seve Ballesteros. |
