Stats My Boy

From a one time high of number nine in the world to his current standing of 253 it has been a tough and rocky road for David Howell. Back problems and relationship make ups and break ups have taken their toll on the man from Swindon who went from a stroke average of 69.94 in 2005 to 72.09 in 2009. Now injury free and happy at home Howell is enjoying something of a resurgence with a tidy eighth place at the recent Irish Open and heads into this weeks Czech Open highly fancied to have another strong finish.

Remember The Days

To many younger viewers David Howell is Sky Sports golf’s antidote to boring Bruce Critchley but he still believes he can recapture the halcyon days of 2006. That season was his finest on Tour, starting with his victory in the HSBC Champions when he out-scored playing partner Tiger Woods, before capturing the 2006 BMW PGA Championship. That lead to his Ryder Cup debut in 2004, where he produced The European Tour’s Shot of the Year at Oakland Hills, a six iron to five feet on the par three 17th hole that helped secure a vital point.

Simon Dyson | 2011 Irish Open | What’s In The Bag?

England’s Simon Dyson clinched his fifth European Tour title with a one-stroke win ahead of Richard Green.
Australian left-hander Green had a long putt to snatch the championship on the final hole but ended up taking a bogey to hand victory to Dyson on 15 under.
Dyson had just three bogeys all week and his win earns him a place in this week’s Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio.

His lows have been well documented so it’s great to celebrate another high to go along with the reel including his Ryder Cup performances and beating Tiger when the two played that epic WGC final match in 2000.

He may a high earner but a more grounded and down to earth guy you wont meet. So, well done again Darren and have a Guinness on us!

In the end Luke Donald emerged victorious after a titanic battle with both the course and Lee Westwood at last week’s PGA Championship at Wentworth. His birdie on the first playoff hole proved decisive as Westwood spun his approach into the water and could only manage a seven. Cruel fate but Westwood knows it shouldn’t have gone to a playoff.
